Three tracks I would call folk rock but honestly genre be darned because they are all SO GOOD

*Fair warning: Fantastic Lyrics Ahead*

Rocco! – “As You Please”
-The line “put me on a pedestal just to leave me on the floor” is one of the most powerful lines I’ve heard in recent memory. This song is on a completely other level compared to the vast majority of music we are sent these days. Everything from the pacing to the instrumentation and certainly the lyrics are absolutely outstanding. It’s about a complex relationship and the give and take elements of serving, loving, being. There are some undertones here that I’ll leave up to the listener to detect, but suffice it to say this is a captivating and even somewhat sensual track. It’s the first track I’ve added to my song of the year candidates list in 2024… so yeah, that’s how much I like it.

Brett Jericho – “Autobiography”
-“You were one in a million, now you’re just one of them.” What an opening line! HOLY WOW! I love the instrumentation and the melody, but the lyricism on this track is exceptional. Jericho’s vocal sits right in the pocket of the production. The phrasing on this track is phenomenal. The lyrical pattern in the track is evident from first listen and it’s so deeply satisfying. This is a song that I will definitely be adding to my personal playlists and listening for the foreseeable future. Jericho is an artist on the rise and this songwriting is undeniably quality folk rock.

Joe Jenneman – “Greener on the Moon”
-If you are a fan of more of a moody folk sound, definitely give this track a spin from Joe Jenneman. The lyrical concept about the “grass is greener” might seem like a cliché, but it’s actually really well done here. It’s about the desire that we all have to wish we were someone else or have what they have, but it’s always unrealistic. Something about the sound reminds me a bit of early 90s alt rock in some places. The sound, overall, though has a gruffness that’s sure to appeal to many in our readership.
