Wise John – “The end is gonna come”
-This isn’t our first time covering Wise John, but it’s the first track we’ve covered with such a heavy philosophical message. “It’s gonna be a long night of running from what we could have been.” The rest of the lyrics indicate that it’s more of a cultural “we” than a specific relationship that could have been. Nevertheless, the prophetic prognostication here is that the end is going to come. The sentiment about looking up at the stars to see all the other possible worlds out there is really beautiful. “Let’s talk a long walk, honey. What else is there to do?” This is brilliant and meaningful; I hope you’ll take it seriously.
Shallow Alcove – “Heart Shaped Locket”
-Before Taylor Swift launched into superstardom, her music was more country and folk focused with an acoustic, storytelling vibe. Shallow Alcove seem to be influenced by that sound, with a sweet number about a heart-shaped locket. It’s an image that is relatable, conveying intimacy and connection that doesn’t always last. The sweetness in the vocal harmonies really help to describe the significance of a relationship that is gone, but was nice while you had it. There’s a gentleness to that is sure to appeal to a lot of our readers.
The National Forest and Logan Bowden – “Love I’m Looking For”
-When I tell people I listen to folk music, this is the type of sound I mean. The acoustic guitar and gentle vocals work together to tell a story of the quest to find love. The expressions in the vocal remind me a little of William Fitzsimmons and Gregory Alan Isakov. That’s some pretty good company to be in for a folk artist! This track has just the right mix of gentle desire with celebratory declarations about this person who is the one being desired. If you’ve ever felt the beautiful sting of unrequited love, this song will certainly resonate. This one feels and sounds sweet, but has a way of getting deep down into your soul if you can connect with it.
