Three alt rock tracks that bring something different to the genre

Sam Scherdel – “R.E.T.R.O.”
-From the first time I clicked play on this song, I felt a connection with the up tempo rock style. It feels like a lot of different pop rock types of bands that I enjoy. Yet, at the same time, I appreciate that it doesn’t sound like any of the rock acts that are on the charts right now. It has a driving pop rock style to it, complete with layered vocals on the chorus, that give it a genuine feel good vibe. If you’re looking for an energetic and positive vibe rock song, give this a spin.

The Bruins – “Scary Flick”
-There’s an energy to this song that I absolutely enjoy. Taking elements of pop, R&B, and rock, the song brings together a number of hit styles for a really cool sound. The lyrics are about conflict, complete with a call from a boxing event sampled in the middle of the track. The message is a bit unsettling in some ways, “but there’s a part of me that loves it.” I understand the sentiments of the song, but I do truly hope it’s just a unique lyric and that someone isn’t genuinely in danger here. It’s not like any song you’ve ever heard before, I guarantee that.

John White – “She Is Everything”
-When you first click play on this song, you’re going to think it’s another acoustic folk tune like we always feature here. But trust me — stay with it. This one offers up something unique. There’s an energy to the lyrics that are about passion. “Just leave her with me cause she’s all that I need.” There’s a romantic desperation that cuts through the lyrics and is mirrored in the song’s construction. Fans of 90s and early 2000s emotional acoustic music (Dashboard Confessional, Coheed and Cambria, etc.) will find a lot to like about this track; it’s a fascinating sound.
