Three alternative pop tracks that help process complex emotions

ROSIE – “Someone you once had”
-This song has so many layers of meaning to it that I find it almost overwhelming. First of all, the music has this subtle approachability in the opening that invites the listener in, like sitting down to talk with a friend. Then the lyrics have this explanation of a broken relationship that could have been something but ended up breaking down. The “what could have been” emotion at the heart of the song is definitely relatable for a lot of listeners. The “pop” elements of the song will have listeners relating and singing along and the layered production creates some stylistic flourishes that aren’t as conventional on pop radio but works really well on this energetic indie pop tune.

ME ND ADAM – “Heartbeat of my soul”
-Everything from the rhythmic energy to the relatable lyrics, this song just feels like a hit. The chorus is really easy to sing along and if you’ve ever been in love the lyrics are super easy to connect. The catchy melodic and sing along elements make it easy to hear a “pop” flavor, but it’s not just straightforward bubblegum pop. There’s a real artful sense of layers to the track. I appreciate that it captures a serious sentiment with a lighthearted and enjoyable style.

Lyncs – “Quarter after”
-The energy of this track is really something special. The atmospheric synth work creates a cinematic energy while the lead vocal does an incredible job of cutting through with this confident yet subtle vocal style. Each lyric feels like it was carefully chosen to convey the emotions of the end of a relationship. The thing is even though it’s about such a challenging emotional time, it’s ultimately a song about having the strength to see yourself through what needs to be done. The sonic structure conveys a sense of optimism and forward momentum, despite the circumstances.
