Three folk singer songwriters to add to your Autumn playlist

Atli – “Waterfalls”
-Everything from the guitar work to the vocal phrasing on this track is wonderful. The composition of the track feels like a comfortable warm blanket on a cool morning. It’s about seeking connection with someone who is no longer “singing along.” The main lyrical voice feels like a counselor or close friend. The tone and message of the track has a warmth to it that is really well done. I appreciate this song as a sort of “pop folk” expression of love and connection. Try it. Share it with others.

Basset – “At my feet”
-Shhh. Just listen to these harmonies. Aren’t they divine? Basset remind me of a few different acts, most notably Shovels and Rope. But discerning folk fans will also notice a bit of a Milk Carton Kids style to this song as well. It’s really breathtaking. The interplay between the acoustic guitar and the vocal harmonies is absolutely perfect. The lyrics are quite metaphorical and I won’t attempt to decode them in this short post, but I will say that they are poetic and worth contemplating. The whole composition is really stunning and I hope folks will give Basset a follow.

The Satellite Station – “Slow”
-If you’ve been around my folk coverage for any length of time, you’ve seen the name The Satellite Station. Consistently impressive, this is an artist who continues to find new ways to impress. This track has an atmospheric folk energy with some thoughtful lyrics that really pull the listener in. The little chord changes and gently expressive vocal lines make for a euphonious blend. The lyrics are social criticism with an eloquent and gentle quality. This is a beautiful piece of songwriting and well worth your time.
