David Burnett – “Picture Place”
-I don’t know who David Burnett reminds me of, specifically, but I feel like I’ve known his work for years. The composition style has a beautiful combination of modern Americana (think Nickel Creek) with classic singer songwriter vibes (think Carson McKee). It’s a wonderful style that pairs nicely with the eclectic lyrical style found on “Picture Place” that feels like a Norman Rockwell painting. This picturesque lyrical imagery delivered with a familiar sounding lead baritone is delightfully comfortable. Add this one to your playlist – any of them – and you’ll love it on each play.
Holly Bernt Band – “Take a look at me now”
-If you’re looking for an up tempo feel good sound, check out Holly Bernt Band. The easiest comparison that comes to mind is an artist like Sheryl Crow. There’s an evident slice of attitude and confidence that drives the sound. But more than anything, I am impressed by the blending of the organ with the guitar and vocal for a sound that feels both nostalgic and fresh. The soul-meets-rock-meets-pop energy of this track is sure to put a smile on the face of a lot of listeners. Spin this one and share with a friend who has made it through some difficulties. They’ll be honored you thought of them!
Katelyn Tarver – “Year from now”
-It’s hard to explain why I like this song so much, but it strikes a chord that few tracks have in recent memory. I guess it’s the combination of a fantastic lead vocal with a heartfelt lyrical style. The melody and overall structure reminds me a *little* of Taylor Swift. That said, Tarver’s style has more of a Ben Rector phrasing and energy to it. The combination of these factors make Tarver’s songwriting an intriguing standout for me. If listeners focus on the phrasing and how well it fits with the melody, there’s a dash of songwriting magic here. I’m eager to hear more from Katelyn Tarver. I can’t wait for the year to come.
