Three neoclassical pieces to begin the merry month of May

Lucas Forch – “Arturo”
-There’s a delightfully expressive style to the piano here. I appreciate the way that it rolls from each phrase into the next. There’s some repetition, but also some changing textures that keep the listener engaged. Mostly, though, I like how it has the feeling of traditional classical in some places then completely shifts in others. I’m not even sure this melody and style has a genre; we’ll include it as neoclassical, but it’s quite unlike anything I’ve heard before and I’m quite pleased about that. Give it a listen; it’s simply hard to put into words.

Ben Cosgrove – “Hadley”
-I appreciate the full piano sound captured in this recording. There’s a cinematic energy to this composition that jumps out at me right away. I don’t know the story behind the title or inspiration for the track, but I know the first time I heard it was an immediate “yes” from me. The way each section of the piece comes together as part of larger “story” feels right to me. I can picture film characters in my mind listening to this; it’s an inspirational melody and the kind of music I appreciate for my neoclassical playlists.

Domenico Quaceci – “Like an ocean”
-If you asked me to summarize what neoclassical music is all about, I’d probably play something just like this from Domenico Quaceci. There are elements of classical composition interspersed with delightful, expressive modern phrases. The dynamics pull the listener in with both timing and volume changes. The piece doesn’t feel like a straightforward musical “tune.” It’s more an expression of the artist’s thoughts and feelings. The piece itself is an active, evolving expression. Perhaps it is teeming with life, like an ocean.
